Strike Debt Portland invites students, debtors, teachers, artists, staff, professors, the public and allies to join us for a student Debtors’ Assembly at 2-4PM on Thursday May 28, 2015 at the Portland State University Park Blocks. We will be outside Smith Memorial Student Union which is located at 1830 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 97201. A Debtors' Assembly is a public forum to talk about debt, to dispel stigmas, myths and taboos about debt, to learn about debt, and to organize ourselves to change the state of debt in our lives. We'll have various short presentations from organizers, academics, debtors, artists and musicians, and there will be opportunities for anyone to share openly about their debt and how it affects their lives. Full-time and part-time adjunct professors and PSUSU - the Portland State University Student Union organizers are expected to attend. Free admission, all-ages, outside, disability-friendly. Surprise at the end! "The college class of 2015 is the most indebted class ever. This is a legacy likely to continue to be passed on for graduation class to graduation class if we don’t do something about it. Even adjusted for inflation, that’s still more than twice the amount borrowers had to pay back two decades earlier. Student loan debt doesn’t have the same consumer protections as other consumer debt like credit cards, auto loans, mortgages, etc. Almost all student loan debt cannot be written off in bankruptcy and can lead to garnished wages, social security, and disability. In some states citizens can lose their professional and/or drivers licenses. Graduates are finding it difficult to buy cars and homes due to the debt. There is rampant fraud in the for-profit post-secondary schooling sector and rampant administrative excess in the public and nonprofit sectors as well." Join us for the planning meeting and/or the Student Debtors' Assembly. _____________________________________________ Listed below are a trip planning link and parking info: Get here via lightrail, bus, or streetcar Using transit is the easiest way to arrive at Portland State University.
