The Canadian band Viet Cong - a band of four white men - is appropriating a name that they have no personal connection to and without any historical context or understanding of what the name means. The band’s drummer Matt Wallace explained that the name came from the way fellow member Flegel held his bass guitar like a machine gun, adding: “All you need is a rice paddy hat and it would be so Viet Cong." The band is appropriating a name, and profiting from it. After many protests, the band apologized last month and promised to changed their name. Help us hold Viet Cong accountable in their promises to change their name. Doug Fir Lounge: Commit to racial equity and inclusiveness for all communities and cancel the October 20th show unless Viet Cong changes their name before coming to Portland.
