Join us for poetry readings, in Arabic and English, by members of Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here! Coalition. The March 5, 2007, bombing of the “ancient bookseller’s street” in Baghdad is remembered as the street of the Shabandar Café, where Iraqi writers, intellectuals and ordinary people would congregate to work and converse. This was an attack on books and on ideas that pierced the heart of San Francisco poet and bookseller Beau Beausoliel who has put out numerous calls for artist, printers, poets, writers and print makers to respond to this attack. In 2019, more than 30 cities, around the world, including Portland, are celebrating this stand for culture. Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here! Coalition of Oregon has celebrated hope and joy to defeat terrorism every year since 2014.

Please join us on April 21st and/or the 26th for the Second Portland Renters’ Assembly at Downtown and North Portland Public Libraries. The Portland Renters Assembly is a gathering of people united by the burden of rent. This burden impacts renters, owners, and the houseless as well as the overall ecosystem of the city. The housing struggle in Portland, much like activism of our time at large, often operates in a state of emergency. There is a need to stand behind those facing foreclosure, eviction, renoviction, houselessness, and rents rising well beyond livability. It is time we stand in solidarity against the basic injustice underlying rent - the exploitation of the human need for housing. Come and share your experience as a renter or with rent-related issues, learn about the history of rent and tenant struggles, and share resources for moving forward together. General Assembly* w/ presentations by Cameron Herrington of Living Cully & members of Socialist Alternative There is another Portland Renters Assembly happening on April 26th, at the North Portland Library on Killingsworth. You are welcome to come to one or both. They will have different presenters, namely: General Assembly* w/ presentations by members of Portland Solidarity Network & former city council candidate, Nicholas Caleb. Snacks and childcare will be provided on both dates. More information about the Assembly is available at portlandrentersassembly.info
