Rose City Antifa presents: Challenging the Both Sides Narrative: Difference Between Fascist & Antifa Movements in the Trump Era with Dr. Stanislav Vysotsky The campaign and election of Donald Trump to the presidency brought a number of movements into the public consciousness. Among them were various factions of the extreme right-wing of American politics. White supremacists and other bigots associated with the "alt right" saw Trump's candidacy as an opportunity to spread their message to a wider audience. Antifascist groups mobilized in response to these public displays of fascism, which brought these conflicts out of the underground and into the streets. This talk will provide an overview of contemporary fascist and antifascist movements with a focus on the key differences between them. Stanislav Vysotsky, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His research on the militant antifascist movement and the relationship between threat, space, subculture, and social movement activism has been published in journals such as Interface: A Journal for and about Social Movements, Critical Criminology, and the book Inside Antifa: The Tactics, Culture, and Practice of Militant Antifascism (forthcoming, Routledge). He has also published research on fascist and supremacist movements in the Journal of Political and Military Sociology, Journal of Crime and Justice, Journal of Hate Studies, as well as several edited volumes. His current research is focused on analyzing the dynamics between protesters, counter-protesters, and police at fascist rallies. https://www.rosecityantifa.org/ Promotional sponsorship by KBOO 90.7 Community Radio https://kboo.fm/

The latest rise of fascist movements and parties has once again made it clear: organized antifascist resistance is necessary. In order to successfully intervene and stop fascism from spreading, it is useful to take a look at the different experiences built from movements in other countries. Particularly the history of the Antifa movement in Germany has to offer a lot of different approaches and experiences. The speakers, who are organized in the “ums Ganze!” Bündnis and have been part of antifascist initiatives and organizations for over 10 years, present the major strategies, struggles, and theories of the „Antifaschistische Aktion“ from 1932 to the present. Afterwards, we hope to have a discussion about the lessons for the movement today, going forwards in 2018 and share our experiences as activists.
