Portland Sacred Harp cordially invites everyone who loves to sing to add their voices to our 23rd Annual Two Day Singing Convention. The 200 year-old American folk tradition of Sacred Harp singing (also known as “shapenote” singing) is experiencing a revival across the country among a diverse group of singers of many beliefs, ages, backgrounds and interests, who are drawn to its soulful sound and social approach to singing. People from all walks of life come together with a single purpose: to make raucous, exuberant music for 2 full days singing unaccompanied four-part harmony. This community music-making is intended to be fun, social and free of performance constraints. The event is free (donations gratefully accepted) open to all ages and no experience is required. Attendees may come and go throughout the weekend as they please. In keeping with tradition, a free “dinner on the grounds” (potluck dinner) is provided at noon by local singers each day, open to all. This year's convention will open with a free singing school Saturday 9:30am-11:00, taught by long time singer Nathan Rees, traveling from his new home in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
