Oregon has made continuous headlines for its blatant racism and injustice against communities of color and those with disabilities!!! Law Enforcement has given a race pass for brutality against protestors that stand against racism and systemic oppression!!! How can you allow this in our state? Silence is Complicity and those with the most power have been silent. Demand STATEMENTS from those elected and appointed to protect and serve as well as those entrusted to fight for legislative equality... If they aren't listening to the voices of those most vulnerable then it's time for those who have privilege to stand with us!! https://www.facebook.com/events/1297482933647612/

The facilitators give you tested tools and strategies to develop a project and take first steps to realize your vision. Participants collaborate and consult with one another throughout the process. Some project examples include: starting a neighborhood kitchen equipment and tool library, organizing a non-curbside recycling system at work, or forming a nature club at your child’s elementary school. After completion, trained Agents become part of the Agent of Change Network, which offers ongoing project support through events, additional trainings, and networking opportunities, all at no cost. *Jeanne and Dick Roy, Co-Directors of the Center for Earth Leadership, are co-founders of the Center, the Northwest Earth Institute, and the Oregon Natural Step Network, three Portland-based nonprofits promoting sustainable practices and ecological awareness.

***Date and Location below Speciesism: The Movie is a new kind of documentary. It takes viewers on a sometimes funny, sometimes frightening adventure across the country, to expose the biggest secrets about modern factory farms, and to ask the biggest questions about the belief that our species is more important than the rest. You'll never look at animals the same way again. Especially humans. Buy Tickets Online: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/544785 "When I entered the theater to see Mark Devries's film Speciesism: The Movie, I was a speciesist. When I came out I could no longer justify the treatment of animals with any rational arguments because they were all demolished in this brilliant and compelling film. The intellectual debate over speciesism is now over." - Michael Shermer (publisher of Skeptic magazine, monthly columnist for Scientific American, adjunct professor Chapman University, and author of Why Darwin Matters.) Screening starts at 7:30pm, doors open at 7pm Buy Tickets Online: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/544785 Where: The Academy Theater 7818 SE Stark St. Portland, Oregon 97215 More info and tickets at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/544785! http://www.facebook.com/events/192419757621052/

WEST COAST DAYS OF ACTION FOR HOMELESS RIGHTS Friday, January 17, 2014 through Monday January 20, 2014 In light of recent legislation across the country that harken back to the “Ugly Laws” of the 1870’s, “Anti-okie Laws” of the 1930’s and the “Sunset Laws” in practice up till the 1950’s, a coalition of organizations is holding rallies and events to bring awareness to the increasing criminalization of homeless and poor people in public spaces. Ordinances that prohibit the conduct of life-sustaining activities in public, such as eating, sleeping or sitting on a sidewalk, when there are no private alternatives, literally criminalize homeless persons’ very existence. WRAP member organizations are creating model legislation for California and Oregon Homeless Bills of Rights which say to local governments “you have abused your power and therefore you can no longer pass/enforce laws to criminalize a person for the acts of resting, eating, sleeping.” While we hear in the news the economy is showing signs of recovery, housing and food costs are still far above income for hundreds of thousands of people and America still has over 39 Million people (with over 16 Million children) living in poverty. Free meal programs, access to safe places to sleep, and opportunities to regain stability are vital pieces to ensuring that recovery reaches all segments of society. Laws that limit the ability to sleep in legally parked cars, share food, sit on benches, and move through public spaces are not only detrimental to this recovery, but also are a threat to human rights for all. “We will not obey unjust laws or submit to unjust practices. We will do this peacefully, openly, cheerfully because our aim is to persuade. We adopt the means of nonviolence because our end is a community at peace with itself,” wrote Dr. Martin Luther King. In his honor and in recognition of the need for a Homeless Bill of Rights, groups across California and Oregon will be holding events and rally’s throughout MLK weekend. Locally, The event will take place Friday, January 17th, 2014 at Sisters Of The Road Café, from 10am to 3:00pm with food, music, theater/arts and speeches by leaders from Sisters community, labor and grassroots organizations. At 3:00 P.M. A Solidarity March with Right To Survive & Right 2 Dream Too, to City Hall to keep alive the dreams of Right 2 Dream Too moving to their new location. Starting at sisters at 3:00. We will march to R2DTOO then down to city hall. Where there will be speeches and entertainment. There is a second event happening on the same day. The Martin Luther Jr Worker's Center, operated by VOZ, is being leased on a month to month basis, since the original five year lease ran out in June. We need to secure a safe and sustainable future for the center, which has generated over 21,000 jobs for Portland area day laborers. At 2pm there will be rally to Save The Center, followed by a march to R2DToo and then City Hall. The 2014 MLK Jr. event happens in a context of deepening of our economic, political and social crises as the result of over 30 years of privatization and dismantling of social safety net policies that have literally pushed working people and their families to fend for themselves in our streets.
