The Portland Community College Rock Creek music program will present the Chamber Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Symphonic Band in a free concert. The Chamber Ensemble, directed by Jason Palmer, will perform classical repertoire from Bach to Piazzolla in a small chamber music format. The Jazz Ensemble will perform a wide variety of jazz, Brazilian and popular music including works by Joe Zawinul, Josh Deutsch, Horace Silver, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and student composers. The Symphonic Band, directed by Noelle Freshner, will perform Amparito Roca by Spanish composer Jaime Texidor, Cajun Folk Songs by Frank Tichelli (a tribute to the people of Cajun folksong culture) and Symphony No. 4 by Andrew Boysen Jr. The concert will also feature the animated piece Autobahn by Ryan George. The Portland Community College Rock Creek music program continues its diverse series of short concerts/lectures with the Brazilian music ensemble Choro da Alegria. The concert is presented in conjunction with the Tuesday evening Music Appreciation class and is free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed. The series is sponsored by grants from the Cultural Coalition of Washington County and the Oregon Cultural Trust and a Beaverton Arts Program Community Grant. The series continues through 2018. Choro da Alegria is a Portland-based ensemble dedicated to playing the wonderful melodies of Brazil. They draw much inspiration from the genre “Choro” which has been loosely called “Brazilian ragtime.” Beyond choro they include classic tunes from Bossa Nova and Musica Popular Brasileira. Choro da Alegria is: Pam Beaty, (7-string guitar), Esteban Diaz, (percussion), Peter Fung (percussion and guitar), and Tom Pinit (bandolim/Brazilian mandolin). The group released its first CD, "quiosque," in June 2015.
