Agricultural production accounts for 11-15% of global greenhouse gas emissions. When taking into consideration distribution, packing, and processing, that percentage surges to ~50%. However, this estimation of agricultural GHG emissions fails to distnguish sustainable agricultural practices from industrial and monocropped systems that rely heavily on synethic, petroleum based inputs. This distiction deserves attention because small-scale, sustainable agriculture actually improves enivornmental health through carbon sequestration, erosion control, increased biodiversity, nutritent recycling, and the list goes on. What's more is that farmers are among the populations most susceptible to repercussions of climate change. Drought and extreme high and low temperatures pose serious threats to farmers, and ultimately to consumers. Join us to hear about environmentally responsible agricultural practices employed by Oregon farmers. Learn about how the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) program bolsters farmers using conservation practices through funding and educational support. And learn how consumers can play a roll in climate smart agriculture. Panel includes: -Kimberly Galland- Conservation Specialist with NRCS -Leslie Carter- co-owner of Jo-Le Farms -Eric Harvey & Louis Kemp- Farmer at Our Table Cooperative https://www.facebook.com/events/556645994519878/

Since January 2009, Friends of Family Farmers has hosted InFARMation (and Beer!) each month in Portland. This is an opportunity to bring the issues that Oregon family farmers face onto the radar of urban consumers, and the community in general. The topic changes each month, but always focuses on the larger picture of the connection between food and farms in our state. When eaters connect with farmers, it makes our food web stronger and real changes in our local food system are possible. Training the Next Generation of Oregon Farmers and Ranchers: Despite the resurgence of interest in agriculture, the availability of land, resources and educational opportunities for new and young farmers/ranchers remains limited. However, like FoFF, there are people working hard to address these needs with creative solutions. Join us as we highlight some fantastic work being done to provide training opportunities and tools for Oregon’s next generation of family farmers.
