The Portland Zine Symposium is a free 2-day zine conference and social covering all facets of zine making and DIY culture. This event has been held in Portland, Oregon every summer since 2001 and hosts over 150 tablers from around the world each year, as well as many free workshops, panels, and discussions. In addition to the panels we generally offer during the symposium, this year’s PZS has one full day dedicated just to skillshare and discussing issues near and dear to every zinesters heart, and we need your help! Ping Pong Man, Scott Preiss, (www.pingpongman.com) will show off his table tennis prowess and trick shots at an exhibition starting at 7pm on Saturday, November 1, at the Ambridge Table Tennis Club (ATTC) located at the Ambridge Event Center, 1333 NE MLK Blvd, Portland (corner of NE MLK and Clackamas Street). Entrance fee is $5. Preiss’ performance will be followed at 8pm by a point-adjusted tournament and open play for all ages and playing levels. There is no separate fee to enter the tournament. Balls and paddles are provided. The Ping Pong Man, Scott Preiss A U.S.-certified National Coach, Preiss has performed his entertaining show around the world. “Preiss is considered a top ambassador of the sport,” said Jeff Mason, coach of ATTC. Preiss will be playing his college-student son, Austin, who won 9 National Junior table tennis titles before he was 15. The 14th Annual Portland Zine Symposium: When: July 12-13, 2014, 11am-5pm both days Where: The Ambridge Event Center, 1333 NE MLK Jr. Blvd. What: A conference celebrating and supporting small press and DIY culture since 2001 Cost: FREE! Mark your calendars for the 14th annual Portland Zine Symposium, an annual two-day event featuring over the independently created works of over 150 tablers from around the world. Join us for a celebration of zines, small press, and DIY culture with zine-related workshops throughout the weekend. Meet up with your favorite zinesters from all over the globe, learn how to create your own zines, and bring your own zine creations to trade at the event! The event, including the workshops, is completely free to attend! This year’s theme is ZINES IN SPACE. Check out our poster artist Katy Ellis O’Brien’s incredible zine-reading space bunny as inspiration for this year’s event. We will kick off the zine symposium a day early this year with an afternoon of skillshares at the Independent Publishing Resource Center (1001 SE Division) on Friday, July 11. Come learn what the IPRC has to offer through half-hour letter pressing, screenprinting, and creative writing workshops. And—back by popular demand—we’ll be throwing our 2nd annual ZINE PROM at the IPRC on Saturday July 12. It’s just like your high school prom but way better. Will you be crowned this year’s zine queen/king/unicorn?? Only time will tell…
