Save the Martin Luther King Jr Worker Center! Friday, January 17, 2014 2:00 PM: Rally at MLK Jr. Worker Center 2:45 PM: March to R2DToo where we'll join up with another march from Sisters of the Road, then on to City Hall! Tell the Portland City commissioners: Make the Martin Luther King Jr Worker Center a PERMANENT HOME FOR DAY LABORERS by deeding the land it sits on to Voz Workers' Rights Education Project. The MLK Jr. Worker Center sits on land leased from the City of Portland. As of July 1st, 2013, the lease changes to month-to-month, and the City could close the Center anytime with 6 months' notice. Day Laborers work for low wages, performing the most difficult tasks like hauling debris, construction, painting, roofing and landscaping. Day Laborers offer a vital contribution to the economic development and growth of Portland; they work hard to support their families and their tax contributions help the growth and the betterment of entire communities. The MLK Jr. Worker Center increases the community’s safety and livability by preventing the exploitation of workers, setting standard minimum wages and providing more ways to collectively organize to protect workers rights and prevent employers from violating the law. The MLK Jr. Worker Center provides a safe, secure, clean and organized location for the contracting process between employers and workers.
