EDUCATION: VANPORT—A SYMPOSIUM ON HISTORY, MEMORY, AND COMMUNITY THE CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY LIBRARY saturday - 9 AM-2 PM / FREE An academic conversation about the Vanport Flood of 1948. Keynoting will be historian and Prof. James Harrison of Portland Community College, who will deliver his address, “Vanport, the Miracle City.” Three additional speakers on the subjects of Vanport in History, Vanport in Memory, and Vanport in Community, along with panel discussions of the implications of Vanport’s importance in all of these areas. SCREENING: LOST CITY, LIVING MEMORIES: VANPORT THROUGH THE VOICES OF ITS RESIDENTS VANCOUVER AVE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH SATURDAY- 6:30 PM / FREe, RSVP recommended A screening of community-produced short oral history documentaries, featuring former Vanport residents sharing their memories. Sponsored by Oregon Historical Society. We will open with a special ceremony with Sen. Jackie Winters (flood survivor) reading the City of Portland's Proclamation for the "Vanport Day of Remembrance." The stories are part of the on-going Vanport Mosaic oral history project, a community-based initiative directed by Story Midwife Laura Lo Forti, in collaboration with Portland Community Media, ReBuilding Center, University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. Vanport Mosaic Festival 2016 Vanport was a unique sociological experiment that forever altered Oregon’s racial history. The Vanport Mosaic Festival is a 4-day multi-disciplinary celebration commemorating the 68th anniversary of the Vanport Flood, uniting Portland area residents through historical and artistic tributes.
