David Barsamian is one of America's most tireless and wide-ranging investigative journalists. He has altered the independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio show Alternative Radio - now in its 30th year - and his books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Arundhati Roy and Edward Said. His latest book of interviews with Noam Chomsky is Power Systems. His best-selling books with Chomsky have been translated into many languages. He lectures on world affairs, imperialism, capitalism, propaganda, the media, the economic crisis and global rebellions. David will be speaking on one of the most critical issues we are facing, nothing short of saving the very planet that sustains us. Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms, and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner that we know. Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about. Those words of warning were written in 1992 by some 1,700 scientists including more than 100 Nobel laureates. Here we are, more than two decades later still talking, still drilling and doing very little to protect our precious planet from an economic system that prioritizes profits over the well-being of Earth. $10 - before; $10-$15 sliding scale at the door Buy tickets here: http://davidbarsamiankboo.brownpapertickets.com/ Open to all ages / Wheelchair access entrance is on 12th Ave., between Salmon & Main Streets

During this daylong workshop, Sewell Lecture speaker, Tim DeChristopher, will share integrated and multifaith strategies to prevent climate change and environmental injustice, combat poverty and restore dignity to both people and the planet. Tim DeChristopher, as Bidder 70, disrupted an illegitimate Bureau of Land Management oil and gas auction in December of 2008, by outbidding oil companies for parcels around Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in Utah. His actions and 21 month imprisonment earned him a national and international media presence, which he has used as a platform to spread the urgency of the climate crisis and the need for bold, confrontational action in order to create a just and healthy world. Tim used his prosecution as an opportunity to organize the climate justice organization Peaceful Uprising in Salt Lake City, and most recently, the Climate Disobedience Center. $40, includes ticket to lecture
