Birds to Know: An Intro to Birding Around Portland Have you been curious to start birding, but aren’t quite sure how to begin? In collaboration with Esther Forbyn and her amazing new project “30 Birds to Know in Portland,” Bark is hosting this evening of tips on how to start observing the amazing avian creatures that we share our home with. Esther has recently produced a set of thirty cards with beautiful images and descriptions in both English and Spanish of bird species in our area that will help newly interested birders to learn a few of our most frequently seen species. The cards will be available for a sliding scale donation at the event. This event is family-friendly and will include activities for kids to engage in. More about the project: Birds to Know has the broad goal of including all Portlanders in important conversations around global warming, biodiversity, conservation, land use, and environmental justice. We believe that learning about the diversity of wild birds in our city inspires wonder and awe, leads to a deeper sense of connection with this place, and encourages people to engage with important environmental issues. Bird enthusiasts in Portland are converting their backyards into bird habitat by eliminating the use of pesticides, getting rid of invasive weeds and planting bird friendly native species. This is just one way that bird watching acts as a gateway to real environmental benefits in our city. Visit www.birdstoknow.org http://www.facebook.com/events/422453624592872/
