Abortion Access Bowl-a-thon
On April 25th pro-choicers and abortion advocates will be trying something new: bowling for abortions. The event will take place at Interstate Lanes (6049 N Interstate Ave, Portland, OR 97217)
The thirteen year old Network for Reproductive Options abortion fund, which helps low-income people cover the cost of their abortions, is hosting the Abortion Access Bowl-a-thon, a community-wide event that is part of a national series of events happening throughout the month.
Community members captain Bowl-a-thon teams of up to five people. Captains ensure that their team meets the fundraising goal for the event—fundraising that goes directly to help people in the community pay for abortion care.
“We’re taking a critical need—funding for abortions—and involving the community in a positive, sometimes outrageous way,” says Katherine McGuiness, a Network for Reproductive Options board member.
“Abortion is nothing to be ashamed of. We’re proud to help people get the reproductive health care they need, and we’re excited to see the community coming together to help us do what a lot of insurance companies and the federal government won’t: pay for abortions.” The Network for Reproductive Options is encouraging bowlers to be creative with costumes, fundraising, and team names. “Where else can you see the Ovary Achievers square off vs. EBOWLA, all in the name of helping people get abortion care?”
